February Updates
Mike was having trouble with his appetite at the beginning of the month. A request was sent out to friends and family before Valentine's Day because he has been feeling down. The request was for people to send cards of love and encouragement to Mike around this loving holiday. Jody is having a hard time now too. She needs to work to bring in income for the family right now, but the time she spends at work takes time away from Mike and she does not eat or drink when she is working and away from him.
Mike had a checkup at the hospital in Omaha late in the month and he has only lost 1 pound in 2 weeks so he is doing better than he was earlier in the year. He is on one new medication to ease his stomach so he will begin to gain weight. He has also been taken off insulin. He is doing better, but there is still progress to be made.

January Updates
Mike is coming home to Lincoln! After many months in Omaha for treatment, it's time for Mike and his wife to come back home. His doctors think that he is now in remission, but it will take a bit more time until they can say for sure what Mike's status is. One of the doctors said that if he can stay in remission from two to five years, he will almost certainly be cancer-free. What good news!

He does seem to have a loss of apetite, however. He says everything tastes like dirt and he's losing weight. He's hoping to be off one of his medications in a few weeks and he has been able to cut back on another medication he was given. He has been given a new medication to help with his sleeplessness, energy, and appetite. We wish him the best and hope the medication works for him.

December Updates
Mike and Jody are now home for the weekend and after his tests this week, Mike should have results by the beginning of next week. He is doing better, but is tired and hopes he can be home for Christmas.
In the beginning of the month, Channel 8 News did a story about Mike and his kids were on television being given the Magical Moments through Union Bank. The support from the community is greatly appreciate and we hope everyone has a wonderful Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Updates from November
Mike is doing quite well and should be back home in Lincoln for Christmas. Jody and Mike are hoping that the bone marrow test they have later in the month will come up negative for cancer. If there are still traces, it is unclear what their next move will be.
Mike's appitite is back and quite large. The doctors are lowering the level of Prednisone for him because they think it might be keeping his hemoglobin too low.

To Share With Everyone
As we grow up, we learn that even the one person that wasn't supposed to ever let you down probably will. You will have your heart broken probably more than once and it's harder every time.
You'll break hearts too, so remember how it felt when yours was broken.
You'll fight with your best friend.
You'll blame a new love for things an old one did.
You'll cry because time is passing too fast, and you'll eventually lose someone you love.

So take too many pictures, laugh too much, and love
like you've never been hurt because every sixty seconds you spend upset is a minute of happiness you'll never get back.

Be Happy

Mom's Vacation on Her Own!
I traveled to Chicago on for a seminar earlier this week and it was fantastic. It was the first time in over four years that I had been away from my child and husband overnight. I know that sounds terrible, but it was LONG overdue. I did all the things I've been longing to do for years: Walk briskly down a city street without a stroller in front of me or a little arm behind me, eat where I wanted to eat, eat WHEN I wanted to eat, and shop for toys without having to explain when it could be played with. I had a great time overall but I did realize how hard it is to go to bed without reading a story and blowing kisses across the room. Needless to say, I was happy to return home. I think I'm good for another four years. :)

Mike Updates
If all goes well and Mike's counts are up, we will be coming to Lincoln Thursday night and coming back Friday. Mike's hemaglobin count is slightly border-line. It is in the upper 8's which could mean he has to have a transfusion soon. We will know Wednesday as to whether we can go to Lincoln or not. Mike's blood type has changed already. It is kind of freaky. Since his donor was a different blood type, Mike is now the donor's type.

Mike is eating like a pregnant women, Ex. sauerkraut, pickled pigs feet, pickled okra, pickles (dill w/garlic), pretty much anything pickled. Mike has gained 2 pounds in the last two weeks. He is gaining a little bit of energy and has been goine to the grocery stores with me. Needless to say, the grocery bills have been a bit higher with there new cravings, but he is eating and gaining
a little bit. There is some hope that we might be home for Christmas. Whether or not to stay, we don't know yet.

Thank you for what you are doing and for all of your prayers.

Jody

Newest Updates
Half way through October and Mike is doing a little better. He is awake a bit more each day and has been talking on the phone for short periods of time. His kidneys are still in bad shape, but hopefully the toxins will expel from his body quickly now.
Mike's children went to visit him in Omaha and he was very happy to see them. He had PT in the morning and was very tired all day, but everyone was happy to be together.

Bad News
October 6th was a very bad day for Michael. He was moved back to the hospital and the doctors have become more concerned about his secondary infection. Mike s*** lines were removed because the doctors thought these might be the source of his infection. It seems that it was because by the end of the night, he was doing a lot better.
On the 9th, however, Mike's kidneys began to fail him and the doctors began talking about putting him on dialysis.

Updates
The first week of October was a little hard on Michael. He and his wife have moved to the Lied Transplant Center because he is more stable now, but on the 4th he had a fever of 102°F and he has been refusing food and water.
The doctors don't know what is causing the fever. He has been told, though, that he must eat, even if he doesn't want to. Mike has lost 20lbs and has been unable to walk to his appointment because he did not have the strength.

Transplant
Mike was admitted into UNMC on the 25th of September and underwent surgery to replace the stent that had to be removed due to infection earlier.
Mike had his stem cell transplant on the 29th of September and the 2 hour operation went well. Mike has had no bad reactions so far and has high hopes.

A New Journey
Mike starts his journey to treatment in Omaha on the 21st of September. He and Jody will have an educational class on stem cell transplant processes and will register into the hospital. He has a pre operation physical in a few days and then he will go through high dose radiation and chemotherapy. After this he will go throught the stem cell transplant. The donor was a close match, but Mike still has more than a 50/50 chance that his body will reject the donation.
