We are all ignorant, just about different things.

About Me

I went to work for my hometown newspaper in Springfiled, OH in 1966 when I was an 18 year old high school senior. I blame it on H. L. Mencken's essays and a Humphrey Bogart movie "The Harder They Fall."

I like to say that while attending several universities, "I never let college get in the way of my education."

My view of the world situation: "Were it not for man's inherent tendency for gratuitous unkindness, we might stand a chance."

On reporting, I say "The purpose of good reporting is to reflect what society is doing in a way that is useful and constructive. That often reflects the adage that newspapers should comfort the afflicted, and afflict the comfortable."

My Family

Fine people in spirit of their association with a balding, stubble-bearded, pot-bellied, allegedly ill-tempered keyboard jockey.

My Pets

Fred the pacifist shar pei is the most dependable of critters on two legs or four that I've known. My love of the equine species stems partly from forty years of covering politics. They don't give you any more horse poop than is truly necessary and there is no ulterior motive in it.

Ed, I sent an email to you a few days ago with a "tongue-in-cheek" letter my Son wrote me while "adjusting to civilian life" while home on leave which was quite humorous I thought and wanted to share it. However, when I just asked him now if he knew the Sgt. Hansen who was killed he has responded that unfortunately he was a member of Mike's platoon. Given that fact, publishing Mike's humorous take on life here probably would not be appropriate at this time. Wanted to let you know. Joyce Simmerman

Heh, altho sometimes wrong-headed, the Plains attitude leads Ed back to reality.

I live in Austin, Texas. Russell D. of New York City, a former Lincolnite, introduced me to Ed's paper. His headlines usually make my jaw drop, for having the nerve to voice ideas I usually keep to myself here in Texas.

It is nice to have a progressive journal to let me keep up with the news back home.

I, too, enjoy Mr. Howard's comments on state, local and national issues. His own views do not get in the way of a fair and balanced presentation of current issues of political shenanigans, the direction our country is taking and suggestions for determining a better way. What a wonderful change from the editorials in the Omaha World Herald! Charles S.

Ed, I very much enjoy your lead-off comments to State Paper. They are a must-read for me. I find them insightful, economical, and interesting. I do, however, sometimes think you pull your punches.

Yours, Rex Carpenter
